In a step that bridges classroom learning with real-world practice, second-year students from the Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics Technologies at Al-Musayyib Technical College carried out a scientific field visit to the Prosthetics and Orthotics Rehabilitation Center under the Babylon Health Directorate.
The visit offered students a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the latest medical technologies and rehabilitation practices. Throughout the day, they attended practical lectures and observed live demonstrations across the center’s specialized units. Experts and technical staff provided detailed explanations on advanced methods of designing and manufacturing prosthetic limbs—both upper and lower extremities—as well as medical orthoses.
Students were introduced to the diverse raw materials used in production, including low-temperature thermoplastics, carbon fiber, and medical-grade silicone. They learned how specialists select the most suitable material for each patient case, and followed the sequential stages of fabrication: from patient assessment and measurement, through casting and molding, to final fitting and precision adjustments. The sessions also highlighted the fundamentals of patient rehabilitation and the importance of accurate prosthetic alignment to ensure comfort and optimal functionality.
This academic field trip is a cornerstone of the department’s educational plan, designed to prepare highly qualified technical professionals ready to meet the demands of the healthcare sector. By engaging directly with cutting-edge medical technologies, students not only enhance their practical skills but also strengthen their ability to contribute to society through innovative healthcare solutions that improve patients’ quality of life.
